a unique and personal way. Join us in a small group walking tour
of the downtown area. Led by trained docents of the Architectural
Foundation, the tour focuses on architectural styles, significant
and historic buildings, aesthetics, past and present building
usage, and landscape history. Discover why Santa Barbara is so
often called "The Riviera of America".
We'll lead you to hidden courtyards, secret fountains and original
adobes. Photographic opportunities abound and our leisurely pace
invites relaxed enjoyment. View at first hand varying architectural
traditions and appreciate close up Santa Barbara's hallmarks:
hand-made tiles, wrought iron detailing, stonework, balconies,
doorways, arches and fragrant plantings.
On
the Sabado (Saturday) Tour, see the historic de la Guerra Adobe,
El Paseo, the Hill-Carillo Adobe, the Meridian Studios, the Lobero
Theatre and much, much more. Hear the rich anecdotal history of
these buildings, their designers, and their builders. Learn what
created the stunning transformation and forever changed Santa
Barbara from ordinary to extraordinary. Celebrate with us the
rich cultural heritage left by the first Spanish and Mexican settlers
and those giants of Southern California Architecture Julia Morgan,
George Washington Smith, Reginald Johnson, Joseph Plunkett and
many others.
On
the Domingo (Sunday) Tour, see the historic art and architecture
of downtown Santa Barbara as it was reborn after the 7.1 1925
earthquake. From the Public library and its famous murals,
through La Arcada Court, up State Street, experience sculpture,
famous courtyards, historic Arlington Hotel, the Granada Theater
and other architectural delights. Learn about the architectural
history and how the Womens League and Pearl Chase forced
the city to maintain an architectural integrity, beautiful public
park spaces and rich landscapes making Santa Barbara The
Riviera of America
The
Sabado Tour leaves from the centrally located de la Guerra Plaza
Saturdays at 10 a.m. (rain cancels). The Domingo Tour leaves from
the entrance of the Public Library Sundays at 10 a.m. (this is
a new tour!). Adjacent parking is available for both tours. Walks
are an easy stroll and take about one and one-half hours. Bring
your camera and the children. Children under 12 are free and should
be accompanied by an adult. Please no strollers or young children.
Walking shoes and suntan lotion or a hat are recommended. Tours
for private groups and the physically challenged by arrangement.
